As part of my design program in college, I took a few photography courses to learn the basics. I used to be a film major, but I still enjoyed working behind a camera after switching to graphic design, and I especially loved taking portraits. For one portrait project, our teacher asked us to have at least 50 raw shots before moving into editing, but I think I took somewhere upward of 100 because my subject and I were having such a fun time with the shoot.
I also fell in love with the editing process, especially playing with light and color. While working on magazines at Premier Media Group I had the opportunity to work in Photoshop a lot more and greatly expanded my skills.
My favorite photography project by far was my final for my last photography class. I focused on places that looked like there should be people there, but with no people in the photo. It really touched on a lot of loneliness and emptiness, and I wanted to instill those feelings in the viewer as well. I intend to continue the project in my free time.
